Subtitling can be described as a type of audiovisual translation that comes with its specifications, criteria, and rules. This type of translation is categorized under “subordinate translation”. The space in the subtitling and translation is restricted to 2 lines of subtitles generally. The subtitles are placed and centered at the bottom of the screen. Each line cannot comprise over 35 characters, including symbol, letter, and space, which means the subtitle will include a maximum of 70 characters. This will be enough to understand the dialogue being given by the actors in an appropriate manner. The subtitle comes with a minimum duration of one second and a maximum duration of only 6 seconds on screen.

There is a direct connection between the number of characters contained and the duration of a subtitle to make it easy to read. The average reading speed influences the parameters mostly. A human will not be able to read the same number of characters in the subtitle if the duration is only 6 seconds or less. The current average reading speed is estimated to be 3 words per second. If this estimated figure is taken into consideration then it can be said that we need at least 4 seconds to read a complete subtitle of 2 lines (containing 70 characters). This will be approximately around 12 words. All these considerations and calculations need to be focused on while offering translating and subtitling services to any company.

The subtitle needs to be synchronized appropriately with the audiovisual document for achieving its fluency and smooth flow. All the essential phases of subtitling need to be handled flawlessly, including spotting; translation; simulation; correction, etc.
